Sometimes you have the perfect image to draw or paint but it's smaller than the size you want the drawing to be. An easy way to transfer the image to your drawing paper at a larger size while keeping all parts proportional, is to use a grid system.
|
To use the grid method, you need to have a ruler, and must know how to measure. You need a paper copy of your reference image, and a pencil to draw lines on the image. You will also need a work surface upon which you will be transferring the photo, such as paper, canvas, wood panel, etc. To draw the grid lines on paper, I would recommend using a mechanical pencil, so that you can get a thin, precise line. Be sure to draw the grid very lightly, so that you can easily erase it when you are finished.
Draw the grid using a ruler and make 1" marks on all 4 sides of the 12x18" paper, and connect the marks. Number the squares across the top 1 through 12 and down A-Q. Using the grid coordinates as reference, you will plot the points where an edge or a line in the reference photo intersects the grid on the drawing paper.
In math, to plot a point is to locate points on a graph by means of coordinates. This is like that process, but with no numbers, you must judge the point of intersection using your feeling for basic proportions like halves, quarters, thirds.

VOCABULARY:
A grid is a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines spaced out at regular intervals, forming squares or rectangles. The lines on graph paper are an example of a grid.
A Grid method: A method for copying the same size or enlarging or reducing a design to the size you need to draw. For our project we will enlarge a photograph by drawing a grid of 1/2 inch squares over the reference picture, then draw a grid of 1 inch squares on the drawing paper. That will result in a 200% enlarged drawing from the original photo and we have increased the scale.
Proportion: the relation of one part to another. When we say to keep something "in proportion" it means that we do not want to make a lop-sided drawing, if we increase the eyes, nose and mouth 200% but the ears 150% then the drawing will look out of proportion and the ears will look too small for the face.
scale: has to do with size, Scale and proportion in art are both concerned with size. Scale refers to the size of an object (a whole) in relationship to another object (another whole). ... Proportion refers to the relative size of parts of a whole (elements within an object).
